In this round of blogging tips, the two megaliths of blogging go mano y mano to see which blogging platform is superior: it's Wordpress vs Blogger. [Tweet "Having just made the switch from Blogger to Wordpress, I'm thrilled to share with you my thoughts on the pros and cons of both. "] I tried to ask my tribe what they wanted to know about the two and they said...everything. So I'm going to try to do my best to cover the parts I consider the most important.
Round 1: Media: importing pictures, video and the like.
I have run into more problems in Wordpress with importing with images flipping around, images not uploading and such. The only problem I ever recall having with Blogger was an image wasn't uploading but it was because I had signed out. Luckily with my WP problems, they have been quickly resolved with a simple Google search. One of the benefits of working with Wordpress is that you own the content and the blog, whereas with Google- your blog is their's. Also, what I really like about WP and uploading media is that I can do it at anytime, not just when I'm writing a post.
Round 2: Code: for those who like to dabble in the html.
The code as a whole for the blog, the WP HTML is supposed to be easy to handle but I would have to say the opposite, I knew how to play around with the HTML and the CSS with Blogger and did so with ease. Granted, I haven't explored too much in WP, the fact that it gives a dire warning makes me scared and also what are php and style pages? I have a lot to learn here. However, I must say that when you're talking the HTML for a blog post, it is much prettier in Wordpress.
Round 3: The fun stuff...widgets and such.
Bloggers widgets were limited and I found myself building some from scratch. Wordpress wins, hands down in this area. There are soooo many cool things you can add to your site, and they're called Plugins in WP. Some of my favourite so far are Click to Tweet, Yoast SEO, Sliders and automatic Watermarks for images. I have so much to explore here.
I actually don't know how many rounds a boxing match might have, so let's throw in a couple more because it's my game.
Round 4: Easiness
I don't recall ever having difficulty with Blogger and Wordpress is definitely more complicated. BUT if you are talented in the art of the Google, then you should be fine. Plus, it's fun to learn new things! Yay for learning. Also, I find that there is way more info out there on Wordpress than there is on Blogger and it is quite user-friendly when you are just doing the basics.
Round 5: Other
I hired a girl from Toronto, Kayla Huffman to do my migration from Blogger to Wordpress and the custom design of my site (which I've since customized some more). I would highly recommend having someone set things up for you if you don't know what you're doing. The headaches (AND TIME) she saved me were well worth her reasonable price.
Now hop on over to Jill's blog to find out her thoughts on the two.

Being on the blogger platform, this is so helpful! Someday I'll probably switch over to wordpress. It sounds like it easier to use than I thought!

Great job summarizing both! I use blogger for my personal blog, and we have a customized WordPress Blog/Site for Miller Ellis and so I have to switch brains constantly. I can't wait to move my personal blog over, but I'm just lazy, it's a lot of work. I agree the widgets are amazing, and the code in wordpress is terrifying. I make my IT lady do it.
ReplyDeleteSo interested to see what others have to say to. Hire someone. BEST advice EVER!!! I seriously almost stroked migrating myself.
ReplyDeleteI really love wordpress it gives so much freedom and I agree the widgets are amazing.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing!

I know I should probably switch to WordPress but it scares me! One of these days...
ReplyDeleteI am super curious about this. I've always used Blogger and am slightly terrified of Wordpress. But your success has me thinking again about switching someday.
ReplyDeleteI want to make the change but find Blogger fits my needs although there are a few things that you can do with a WP that I find really cool.
ReplyDeleteI agree completely with this!
ReplyDeleteI've heard so many great things about WP, but am too scared to make the jump. For now what I have works, but when/if I do make the switch it will definitely be by someone else!
ReplyDeleteYou nailed it with this post girl! Wordpress really doesn't even come close to Blogger and you did an amazing job discussing that.
