A Murder Mystery Dinner Party

by - March 04, 2018

We decided this weekend would be a perfect weekend to try out a murder mystery party with all the family being up for a random family weekend.  Well, it was also Kyla's birthday so any reason to go over the top and celebrate seems to be the norm for our clan, so why not?

3 weeks prior, we were all assigned a character (by me) and were given some top secret information about the role we would play.  Much to my delight, everyone arrived in full costume and maintained their new persona for the entire evening.

None of us had ever done a murder mystery, so we learned as we played along, but I would say that it was pretty easy to do and not too confusing- there's just lots of printing to do.

The details:
I had read up on numerous downloadable murder mysteries and finally settled on one from A Night of Mystery.  Obviously the Hollywood theme worked well with the Oscars being the next day, but there were at least 10 more that I really wanted to do. There are parties that work for groups as large as 100-200 people- how do people do that? Anyway...as for the company- it really was nicely laid out and easy to follow.  I had to prep all the envelops beforehand that had the objectives for each guest.  That was the nice thing about this game- I could set up, host and still be a part of it as long as I didn't peak- which I didn't.  For the record, my sister was murdered and it was my Dad who did it.  No one guessed correctly.

Most people found their attire at Value Village or their closets.  I got my dress on Amazon Prime.

The decorations were easy to find at Party City and provided some fun backdrops for photos.  We did our game around a supper, but I wouldn't do that again as it was distracting and awkward all sitting around the table trying to have these conversations that had to happen.  Next time I do one will be appetizers only.

I'm happy with the way the night went and am glad I got to try it out with my family....everyone really got into their roles (my mom decided she was British and was in full accent all night) and we had many many laughs.  Mostly at people.  You can probably figure out who.
