A Portrait of Love

This week kicks off the 'Let's hear it from the Girls' series that is going to focus on fostering strength.  If you have a post you want to write for one of the upcoming topics...email me your ideas or your post - deena.simair@gmail.com...see post schedule here.

The topic this week is a Portrait of Love and I will likely spend the week throwing back to some posts my friends did for me on my 'What Love Looks Like' series a couple years ago, I thought today would be a great day to do my engagement story post. I can't believe I've never blogged this!

June 7, 2003- Saskatoon, SK

I was in Saskatoon for an interview at Saskatoon French School- I had given notice that I was leaving my teaching job at my alma mater and prepping for the move to be in the same city as Dan. I was not expecting to get engaged that day.

Sidenote- I got the job and taught at SFS for 3 years- this is the school my kids currently go to.
When I got back to Dan's condo, he opened the door barefoot, in a suit.  This was not something out of the ordinary as he was always putting together sweet surprises for me- so I was mostly excited for some more thoughtful Dan.

He led me around the condo by a string in what was a series of checkpoints.  At each stop there was a long stem rose, a candle and a little note card with something special that he loved about me.  There was 25 of them in total.

The final card was on his bed and was about the future and still at this point, I was just so in love and giddy over the fun that was that maze, that I had no clue.  I read the last card and gave him a big hug, gushing over how wonderful he was.

Ummmm...so I still have everything in this picture.  Dan made that desk for gaming..it's currently used for Lego. His bedspread is my hammock blanket. The blue blanket is Willis' coveted "blankie" and that chair is still in my TV room.
So he told me to see what was at the end of the string and when I finally clued in, I find a beautiful ring and next thing I know he was down on bended knee, proposing.  I barely remember what he said I was so excited and most likely crying.

I got to phone all my people right away, which was super fun- Kyla and Rob and Dan's brothers I believe too were all partying over at my parents' place and all my girlfriends were at Christy's in Calgary.

We headed back to PA that weekend to spread the news, Dan's mom made a beautiful cake to celebrate and my family was all together for Grandpa's birthday.

Don't even get me started on my fashion choices...
