Lessons Learned in Aging 2- Moi

As I mentioned in Monday's post, my girlfriends took me out for my birthday supper on Friday.  Like we do for every birthday, the lucky gal gets to pick the restaurant and we bring the gift, I picked Little Grouse on the Prairie and it was divine. Actually, everything about that night was near to perfection, from my outfit to how I felt about myself, to my company and the conversation, the delicious homemade Italian meal and the rainstorm.

Isn't it weird how just feeling good about yourself changes so many things? My straightener curls turned out perfectly (which is a minor miracle as I suck at doing my hair), I finally got to wear my new Lularoe skirt and shooties.  My body felt tight and toned from all the working out.  As I sat down and looked around the table, my friends all looked radiant too.

Spring Break 2001..our last year of University and I think the last time I sported a bikini (and thankfully the last time I had my hair braided)[/caption]

In our conversation that night, we were talking about how we see ourselves and the self-talk we use.  We looked at a picture of us on the beach in Mexico from 2001 and noted that likely, the 21 year old versions of ourselves, whilst looking quite toned and svelte in our bikinis, were also likely whining about something on our bodies.  Oh, how I would love to slap 21 year old Deena right upside the head and tell her how awesome she looked.  But then it made me think that likely, 60 year old Deena would want to high five 37 year old Deena in the face with a chair with all horrible thoughts I think about my body.  Sometimes out loud.

We need to be kinder to ourselves and I'm going to start working on that.  Let's take a look at the magical outfit.  This was the the produit final, but it took awhile to get there...I had a hard time working with the blues and yellows in the Lularoe/Iforgetthename skirt.  Which, I gotta say, it's crazy comfortable.

I played around with blacks but ended up with my Frye shooties, denim jacket and junky white shirt with a little bling necklace.  I (attempted) curling my hair with my straightener and still need work on it.

Will definitely be wearing this one again!

  4. I have always been so hard on myself and how I look. It's something I'm working on and hopefully getting a little better? I love this outfit and I really want a Lularoe piece. That necklace is so pretty.

  5. 37 year old Jordan may also high five you with a chair. Seriously. That bootie. Jealous.

  6. I’ve never had any issues with getting older but this year has been eye opening. I’ll be 35, no marriage no kids, just me my computer and my art. It doesn’t bother me but it does make me aware of time. But in the end who cares! Life is for living right! It looks like you and your friends had yourselves a great time. I always try to be mindful of my weight because I know 10 years from now I will look back and want to kick myself. We all need to be a little kinder to ourselves. You look beautiful in your birthday outfit, I’m loving the skirt and your hair is on point. Can I mention your curves are killer in this skirt.

  8. Happy belated birthday beautiful. This outfit is fantastic, but that third picture is straight out of a magazine. I always look at you and see a well put together woman. You appear to be strong and confident, but then it's posts like this that remind me that you are a woman just like any of us. We are hard on ourselves. I use positive self-talk often now days, especially when I feel old feelings of disapproval creeping up. My biggest fear is my girls having the same self-image issues that I had.

  9. Happy Birthday! My husband just said that to me the other day - that when I am 60 I will look back and wish I looked like the 40 year version of myself. Why are we so self-critical. I love the ensemble you put together for your dinner out.

  10. Such a lovely outfit - you looked beautiful for your birthday! Happy birthday! I really like your printed skirt, and that statement necklace is perfect with the white top.

It's true we can be so hard on ourselves, focusing on 'flaws' instead of all the good things about ourselves. And in most cases, no-one else notices the flaws we think we have!

Hope you are having a lovely week.

  13. You looked great here, lady- and it's the perfect birthday dinner outfit to celebrate with friends.

I'm totally with you- I look back at pictures of myself at 21 and remember how much I worried about how I looked, when in reality everything was SO YOUNG AND I WAS CRAZY, haha. And I'm sure my 60-year old self will think the same about my 32-year old self.

  29. I needed this post! My husband gets on me for my negative self-talk, and I'm constantly looking at pictures from just 5-6 years ago, thinking how envious I am of myself then. It's a constant battle. Love that Cassie skirt on you!

  30. Even at 59, I still have these struggles. But less often. And other things have taken priority over worrying about my double chin or dimpled thighs...most days. By the way, your derriere looks spanklicious, as we say in my family.
