When I splurge, when I ...what's the opposite of splurge?

When I sat down to make my budget for this year, I decided it was about time I take a look at my spending habits in order to start spending more mindfully and to stop wasting money on useless things.  For example...that 1600$ I spent at Sephora last year? Well, likely half of it was stupid products that I didn't really need...like another lipstick or eyeshadow palette.  That being said, in order to save money I'm not just going to buy cheap products  because for me, sometimes cheap may be less money but the quality usually sucks or it falls apart minutes later.  So mindful spending this year to me, is more like buying good quality products that I know will do the job, even if they may cost a little more, but it also means buying less of things.  Because really, the last thing I need is more stuff to clutter my world.

So when making my list of things I splurge or save on, I found it interesting to see that the majority of staples in my life are splurges.  Turns out I'm not too willing to skimp on my everyday things, like...

  1. Moisturizing products.  Currently I am loving the TIDAL SUNDAY RILEY cream in the mornings, especially during our very cold and dry winters.  My skin regime does not get skipped or skimped and is very important to me....stay away wrinkles, stay away.

  • all makeup for that matter is a splurge for me...except the only thing I will save on is mascara...I like L'Oreal's Voluminous, but I also like Make up Forever's Smoky Eye. I am really trying to limit what I buy this year, only getting something once it needs replacing instead of 'just cause'.

2.  Shoes.  I just got a cute pair of transition wedge boots for slushy season (we went from -50 to +5 within a week)....check out these Sorel wedges.  I rarely save on shoes- I think I have one pair of flats from H&M, but everything else is my favourite brands like Sam Edelman, Dolce Vita or Miz Mooz.

3. Wardrobe staples- like jeans, blouses, cardis...okay..everything. Busted.

4. Handbags- I may or may not have a cute little collection growing of my favourite friends...Tory, Marc, Michael, Rebecca & Kate.  I am now on a handbag buying hiatus because I want a Chanel bag for my 40th, which is far too close.

No splurge

  1. Anything that's trendy- I will buy those items at H&M mostly or the Twik line from Simons.

2. Something I just want to try to see if I'll like like this veggie spiraller that I just bought this week, also Amazon Prime is my favourite thing.  My goal is to not go into Walmart this year, so amazon shall replace it:

3. Salt n' vinegar chips- sometimes the cheapest ones have the best flavour.

Fabulous advice D. I try to spend way less on trendy items and a refusing to go to Sephora or Ulta unless I'm out of a product. I have a whole drawer full of beauty products I've only used once. Shameful! Most of my staples are splurges as well, especially my skin car, the oder ya get, the more its worth it.

  2. Oh yes I understand the handbag splurging entirely! Also a Chanel is a wonderful goal to have! I'd love to be able to splurge one of my bonuses on a bag, haven't done that since the boys came along, but once I'm back to regular work and things are a little more normal I might be able to use it as "fun money" again!

I have plenty of time to decide my next splurge-worthy purchase anyway with my 6 month no shopping challenge!

Hope you have a great week ahead of you :)

  3. I have totally started to buy better after being told over and over by the hubby to do that very thing. Makes a difference and I agree with on what not to splurge on too!

  5. I'm newly into skin care and I can't believe how much I've spent in the last 2 months. I am also wishing the wrinkles away! Let me know how you like the spiraler, I'm been pondering that purchase as well.

  6. Bags for sure. And shoes. I too am in bag hiatus, mainly because I don't have any more room. I'd say skincare too, but I've been on the struggle bus with that because I can't find stuff that works. Sigh.

  7. I struggle with this. I don't know why, but I find it hard to splurge on myself, and I'm always buying things because "it's such a good price, it's practically free". I definitely need to focus on quality over quantity.

  8. I've been getting that same moisturizer but it's SO darn expensive. I actually compromised and bought the smaller one available from Sephora but it was so so small. I wouldn't recommend doing that!

  9. I hate buying make-up, so I definitely tend to save in that category!

  10. I'm with you. I never splurge on the super trendy things because I know I'll only wear them for a couple of seasons and then be done with them. I only splurge on classic items that I will wear for years and years!

  11. I love this, you are a girl after my own heart. Although you know you have a shopping problem when you get a pacakge in the mail and mostly forgot that you ordered it! haha :) Oops!

  12. I'm with you! Most of my staples are splurges and trendier pieces I always try to save on. Skincare is one area I won't budge on and is always a splurge.

  15. I had been pining away for a Louis Vuitton bag for my 40th…but I think I'll use that money instead on a trip to LA where I can drink lattes and celeb watch in the Grove or at the Farmer's Market…make more memories that way :)

  16. Your caption for the image made me laugh. Isn't that kinda frustrating?! Confession: I have never bought anything from Sephora. I should totally fix that, right?!

  25. Logan would totally agree on the chip front, he always says no name has better flavour. I am with you on the moisturizer/makeup as I have developed acene prone skin since babies and some shoes I splurge on but trendy ones I have been having luck buying at the Bay the Expessions line if on sale they are not too bad. I will be watching for your good finds. 😃

Sunshine inspired fashion

Today I'm showing you the first outfit I got on my trip to Scotland/England and it just happens to be in one of my favourite colours....yes, yellow.  I also put together some of my fave yellow picks on the interwebs for you in the above link.

I have posted a few of my fave yellow pieces before like the one with the blazer  or the one with the yellow shoes and jacket and then there is also this bag that I got in Vegas last year that always makes me swoon....

Anyway, I'm rambling....today's outfit is a dress, but you'll have to hop over to the Blended Blog to see it. Muahahahahha...here's sneak peak.

A blogger meet up in Toronto

It was like a weekend long blind date...... e-Harmony but for friends..... Possibly one of the craziest things I've done..... But I spent the weekend with 10 other women whom I met online. Well, except for my real life bestie on the far right. We have a group of 14 bloggers who have been collabing since the spring of 2014 and what first was simple blog fun has quickly become a sisterhood.   Last year we met in Vegas, this year we settled for Toronto and had 11 members.
Trip highlights include a bus trip with wine and Niagara Falls, a walking tour of downtown Toronto, plenty of great meals, a shopping adventure and rooftop hot tubs at night.  I could go into the details, but for me, the actual trip to Toronto wasn't why I went...the Jays weren't even playing. What brings me the most joy about this trip is the fact that women from all walks of life, all ages (we had 30, 40 and 50 somethings) with a gamut of different interests took a leap of faith and traveled to meet women…

London 1

Sunday/Monday was a blur.   It went from cruising around Toronto (that means shopping) with the little group of Blended Bloggers that were left over to heading to the airport to meet Dan and the kids then to an overnight flight to Dublin and then another 2ish hour flight to London.  At least the kids slept an hour or two, but I couldn't do it.   Currently in zombie mode.   When we got to our hotel (MalMaison Charterhouse Square) we had to nap. Well I had to anyway before I started losing it.   After an hour long family nap, Dan headed to work and I decided to take the kids out on an adventure in the neighbourhood.  We're only 850 metres from St. Paul's Cathedral and I hadn't visited it last time I was here so it was an easy pick. First I had to devise a plan to keep them engaged and because Pokemon is all they ever want, it was an easy bait.  The deal was that if they came and learned something with me, they got to have some Pokemon time in the area. It worked like a …
