Our year, in review

As custom around here would have, instead of sending out a newsletter marking the significant events of our year past, I have compiled a video instead.  Although I really have to step up my video taking skills next year if I want to keep up with this tradition.  I sense a resolution in the making.

I decided for this years' video to keep with my theme of "Christmas Memories" that has taken over the holiday decor in our house (pictures of Christmas' past in all the frame) so if you know my family well, you'll see a few appearances from the people of yesteryear, or my much younger parents and a baby Deena.

2016 was a good year: a year with some fun trips to see friends and family from Vernon all the way to Toronto.  It was a year that saw Lucia start her first piano lessons and joined her first basketball team.  Willis hasn't stopped growing and now has the same size feet as me; he also has enjoyed basketball and baseball. Dan remained busy with Skip and got to ex…

Scenes from Christmas 2016

I wanted to do a "top 10 photos" of our Christmas-type post, but it turns out that I have more than 10 favourites photos that showcase how we have been celebrating over the holidays.  So here are my 20 best stories from the past week in our lives:

Jen and Rob, Josh and Chris all come home.  We celebrated "unofficially" Dan's birthday, because Dan doesn't like birthday parties (for him) but I love starting the holidays off with a laid back party chez nous...this year it was an appetizer party.  This is one of my favourite events of the year because we combine the two families and get to play, plus it really feels like a great way to start off the holidays.  High fives to Kyla for designing a very Dan birthday cake this year.

2.  We spent a couple nights at my parents' place with the entire family: now that's a lot of busy.  But the good busy, the busy that fills your heart with joy seeing the kids so excited for Christmas.  The adults did a special g…

Merry Christmas!

'Twas the night before the night before Christmas and all through the Simair manor, I was preparing to celebrate the glamour.

The appetizers were laid out on the island with care, because all of the family would soon be there.

The children were put to work making their beds, while visions of pokémon danced in their heads.

And me in my apron and Dan in his sweats, hosted a party for our special guests.

It was the beginning of the holidays for our family, as we celebrated Dan's birthday around the Christmas tree.

The moon on the breast of the lack of winter snow, gave the lustre of a fall-day to the objects below.

A gathering of family for the holiday feast,  so I guess that the thing I should do in the least

Is to wish you a Merry Christmas, my dear blog family- hope your days are filled with glee.

December Cozy Link up: Outfits of Christmas past

I would like to think that I get all fancied up for Christmas like the days of yesteryear.  Gone are the days of getting a new outfit just for Christmas and being pretty all day long. Nope, I'm not even going to pretend that I get dolled up; I'm in my pajamas for most of the holidays and only get dressed for family photos.  So I can't even show you what I plan on wearing this weekend as we celebrate Christmas.  Nope.  Chances are I will be decked in my polar bear onesie, without a care in the world.

So I thought it would be fun to show you what we wore for Christmasses past, when I used to get fancy (or when my mom made me).

[caption id="attachment_8524" align="aligncenter" width="1024"] I loved this plaid skirt and vest with bow. Also...I would totally wear my Grandma's poofy turtleneck right now. And aunty Chris...head to toe loepard?! Love it.[/caption]

Christmas memory

Welcome if you're joining from My New Happy where Lana talked Christmas memories.  I got a little something for you today and then you can hop over to Carrie's blog and see what she has to say.

Christmas to me is more than just a memory: it is a feeling that takes over when you surround yourself with your most important people.  It is the gleeful anticipation on the faces of the kids, big and small, as they eagerly await the arrival of Santa.  It's that joyful feeling when you get to see your family again and get to spend that time together, reconnecting.  My Christmas is all the preparations put into a grande meal; new dishes to devour and old recipes that remind us of our past.  Christmas is also Midnight Mass at church, with everyone dressed up and the beautiful music that rings through the halls.

Some of my favourite Christmas memories were spent at my Grandma Diehl's house in small town Saskatchewan, Marcelin.  I think the population of this town tripled at Chris…

Friday Factoids, le deux.

I am jealous of all the snow Toronto is getting right now. It looks like fall in our neck of the woods but feels like an igloo that's coated in ice, ice cream, ice particles and icicles.
I used to be able to sleep in but I haven't been able to lately.  I kinda enjoy being an early bird though, the house is so quiet and cozy and coffee seems to taste better that early in the morning.
It's been a nutty week in our world.  I don't even know where to start or what to say other than that I'm extremely proud to see what can be accomplished with hard work and dedication.  I have been privileged to see SkiptheDishes grow from concept to what it is today and to actually see all that stuff that my husband (and his brothers) have been preaching about for all these years pay off, well that is pretty damn cool. I feel like I'm living someone else's life right now.  This is my favourite article of all the articles that were released yesterday, you can read it here.  As I l…

A lip obsession

Today's post is less about the cozy and all about the gloss.  You see, awhile back Christy got a Kylie lipkit and because she had one and loved it, I had to have one too.  We're best friends like that.  We should also not be allowed near a mall together.  Well, so says our husbands anyway.

But before I get to my lipstick post, I want to share with you a gift I received in a Canadian blogger exchange from Ashley at Life As I Know It 09.  I wanted to get to know more Canadian bloggers and thought this would be a great way!  Ashley sent me some perfect ornaments for my tree....in French and with gold accents too and a beautiful layered necklace!  Thanks, Ashley!  You'll have to head over to her blog to see what I got her.

Now back to lipsticks.  Christy raved about the longevity of the lip stick and I wanted in on the hype and ordered my first two: Posie K and a purply colour.  Now the purple colour I sent to my blog friend, Nicole because she was doing amazing things and I …

Delectable Drinks

I'm back again on a Tuesday to share a part of our online supper club...this time "drinks".  I'm not too sure why I signed up for drinks to be honest because I'm not fancy.  I can crack a beer and cork wine and drink it like a pro.  But for the sake of why the hell not, I decided to start coming up with a collection of drinks I could use over the holidays whilst we have company.  You can follow me on Pinterest if you want to see what I'm curating.  Since I had some pumpkin defrosting in the fridge, I decided this to test a pumpkin drink, so we did the Hot Buttered Pumpkin Rum.

It took  me maybe 5 minutes to make the butter concoction (which now sits in the fridge until I want another one) (which is right meow).  It was also perfect for a -40 degree night by the fire (which also happens to be right meow too).

What are you drinking over Christmas?

Hop on over to Sarah's blog to see what kind of easy peasy appetizer she put together for us.
