Feeling inspired: food edition

Hey peeps,
This week I'm feeling inspired:  I'm back to trying new things in the kitchen, I'm getting dressed (nicely and not scrubbily) and I'm feeling connected to life and the people around me, whether in my face-to-face world or my internet world.
Maybe that's what a long weekend can do for you.
Anyway, so this week I figured I'd focus my posts on what has been inspiring me.
Let's start today in the kitchen with three recipes I've tried from my favourite magazine, Chatelaine and one that comes straight from the family archives.

BBQ Grilled Pizzas and BBQ Corn on the Cob
I need to perfect the art of not burning the crust and eventually I'll grill my own handmade pizza shells and not store bought ones.  I love the smokey taste that the BBQ gives pizzas, and corn for that matter too! These recipes will definitely go on repeat on our summer menu.


Summer Club Salad
I didn't have avocado so I used tomato instead.  And I sillily used turkey bacon instead of the real deal.  Turkey bacon has now been outlawed from the kitchen, I don't care how few calories it has, we're officially a wholehoghousehold.   I also grilled some tortilla shells with garlic butter as a fun side.  This salad was good but I imagine would be a  whole lot greater with real bacon.

I was surprised at how much the kids loved this, considering one of the spices in the meat is cumin.  They devoured their meat on a stick and had some fun eating too.  I added Dal Bukhara to this meal because it's always yummy to have something spice to soak up with naan.  This recipe will be on repeat this summer.  Next thing I need to learn how to make is my own naan.



Grandma Diehl's Hamburger Soup

Give me a couple cloudy days and blah energy and this is my go-to meal.  I usually make a hugeass batch so we have some ready in the freezer.  The only thing that was missing was Grams' buns.  That will have to be my next thing to make (although I haven't quite perfected the art of bun-making)



This is my mom's recipe, not my Grandma's, but it's quite close.  She made me this recipe book when I moved out to Quebec for university.

Move over Coronas, this is definitely going to be my go-to drink this summer.  I need to perfect my recipe too.  Nothing beats asparagus from the garden as a garnish!


It feels good (and tastes good) to be inspired and to be more aware of the wonderful things around me.  Come back on Wednesday when I show you some inspired outfits I've been putting together (and sometimes wearing out of the house, but most times changing back into my lulus) (oops)

A blogger meet up in Toronto

It was like a weekend long blind date...... e-Harmony but for friends..... Possibly one of the craziest things I've done..... But I spent the weekend with 10 other women whom I met online. Well, except for my real life bestie on the far right. We have a group of 14 bloggers who have been collabing since the spring of 2014 and what first was simple blog fun has quickly become a sisterhood.   Last year we met in Vegas, this year we settled for Toronto and had 11 members.
Trip highlights include a bus trip with wine and Niagara Falls, a walking tour of downtown Toronto, plenty of great meals, a shopping adventure and rooftop hot tubs at night.  I could go into the details, but for me, the actual trip to Toronto wasn't why I went...the Jays weren't even playing. What brings me the most joy about this trip is the fact that women from all walks of life, all ages (we had 30, 40 and 50 somethings) with a gamut of different interests took a leap of faith and traveled to meet women…

London 1

Sunday/Monday was a blur.   It went from cruising around Toronto (that means shopping) with the little group of Blended Bloggers that were left over to heading to the airport to meet Dan and the kids then to an overnight flight to Dublin and then another 2ish hour flight to London.  At least the kids slept an hour or two, but I couldn't do it.   Currently in zombie mode.   When we got to our hotel (MalMaison Charterhouse Square) we had to nap. Well I had to anyway before I started losing it.   After an hour long family nap, Dan headed to work and I decided to take the kids out on an adventure in the neighbourhood.  We're only 850 metres from St. Paul's Cathedral and I hadn't visited it last time I was here so it was an easy pick. First I had to devise a plan to keep them engaged and because Pokemon is all they ever want, it was an easy bait.  The deal was that if they came and learned something with me, they got to have some Pokemon time in the area.
