Christmas Gift Guide

Musings of a broken heart.

I went back and forth on doing this post but in the end I decided that it's an event that, although sad, I will want to remember and look back on.
Last week we had to say good bye to our beloved cat, Sniper.  Our hearts are broken.

She hadn't been eating for a couple weeks and I didn't see her bouncing back.  She was hiding under our bed most of the hours of the day and only really coming out to drink.  It was one of the most difficult decisions we have ever had to make, but it was the right one.  Fortunately for us, our vet is also our sister in law, Marina.  So it was almost more reassuring knowing that she would be the one dealing with the good bye.  I have never seen a vet/sister more compassionate and loving to animals and to the animal's family.  Marina, you made a very hard time so much easier simply by the love in your eyes and the warmth in your words.  Thank you.

Dan got me Sniper as a "welcome to Saskatoon" gift about 9 years ago.  She has lived with Kyla, Candace, Alynne, Dan and I  and was the sweetest kitty.  I will never forget her hiding in present bags at Christmas or climbing up whomever was cooking in the kitchen.  In her later years, she became quite...fierce:  those who could get close to her were very much loved and snuggled and Dan often complained that Sniper got first dibs on the cuddles at night.

Sometimes I wonder why we even have pets, especially having gone through the feelings brought up in the past couple weeks.  It was and still is freaking sad.  And part of me wants to say: nope, never again will I have a cat.  I just don't think I could do this over again.
But in the end, when you look at the love they bring you and the joy they can bring to children and to your family, I realize that it was and is so worth it.  Sniper was loved, will be missed and like the other animals who have come and gone, she will remain in our hearts and memories.

  1. From one cat lover to another, I'm so sorry for your loss. I gave Baby Kitty an extra long ear rub and a bigger than normal helping of food in remembrance of Sniper.

    Hugs to you...
